It is said that man can survive without food for one month, but without water, he cannot survive for more than seven days. That's right, drinking water is vital as it helps almost every part of the human body to function. But many of us do not drink the required eight to 10 glasses of water daily and as a result, our bodies are dehydrated. Some ailments like ulcers, fatigue, depression, heart pain, headaches, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are caused or exacerbated by mild to chronic dehydration.

Now consider this - water makes up almost 50-80% of our flesh vessels, more than 75% of our brain, 80% of our blood and 70% of lean muscle. Which means absolutely every system in our body depends on water! And in case you don't already know, water regulates body temperature, removes wastes, carries oxygen and nutrients to our cells, helps cushion our joints, prevents constipation, alleviates the burden on our kidneys and liver, aids in digestion and dissolves vitamins, minerals and other nutrients so that our bodies can utilise them better.

Drinking water can also help in weight loss by increasing our bodies' metabolism. It also keeps our skin moist, reduces headaches and dizziness, and fights fatigue.

But more so, it's a great exercise for the mind, body and soul. Meditation is the method of bringing a scattered, disorganised mind into a state of peace, quiet and tranquility. The word meditation, is derived from two Latin words: meditari (to think, to dwell upon, to exercise the mind) and mederi (to heal). Its Sanskrit derivation 'medha' means wisdom.

The benefits of yoga are manifold. It helps increase flexibility, strength, stamina, and improve blood circulation and functioning of our organs and glands. In short, it helps strengthen just about every aspect of our physical and mental health. Combined with meditation, it calms our mind and helps release bound up tension and emotion that can lead to illness and dysfunction in both our body and mind.

Sleep Well
Not getting enough z's? You'd better hit the snooze button now. When we lack sleep, our entire body goes haywire! It performs at compromised levels, so much so that we can't be our best at work and in relationships. Sleep deprivation also disrupts the process of removing unnecessary chemicals from our body, raises blood pressure and causes variations in heart rate, which may contribute to heart disease and increases susceptibility to viral and bacterial pathogens.

So if we want optimum health, we must have at least eight hours of uninterrupted sleep every night. Sleep not only gives our body a much needed rest from physical activities of the day, it also triggers a growth hormone to renew tissues, form new red blood cells and promote bone formation. We also become mentally sharper, have a better memory and live longer.

Is laughter really a good medicine? Yes and we're not kidding!

Touted as a fun-loving cousin of deep-breathing, laughing increases intake of oxygen, six times more than we would normally inhale. Research has shown that it helps aid digestion and release favourable glandular hormones, such as endorphin - the body's natural painkiller. Endorphin is known to perk up our moods, giving us a natural high. Laughter also helps strengthen our immune system, lower blood pressure and improve relationships. As the adage "laugh and the world laughs with you" goes, laughter brings everyone together.
