Hormonal imbalance that occurs during a woman’s menstruation cycle can cause a range of discomforts from cramps to a bloated stomach. By consuming herbs such as tangkwei, a woman can better manage the symptoms experienced.

Through this delicious soup recipe, enjoy the nourishing goodness of Chinese yam and lotus seeds complemented with BRAND’S® Essence of Chicken with Tangkwei.

Ingredients:

  • 2 bottles of BRAND’S® Essence of Chicken with Tangkwei
  • 900ml to 1000ml of tap, distilled or mineral water
  • 1 skinless chicken thigh
  • 1 carrot, 8 inches (washed and cut into 8 pieces)
  • 1 Chinese yam, 4 inches in length and 2 inches in diameter (washed, skinned and cut into 8 pieces, wear plastic gloves if you are allergic to yams)
  • 12 to 15 dried lotus seeds (washed and soaked in hot water for 10 minutes to soften)
  • 4 seedless red dates
  • 12 to 15 goji berries
  • 4 pieces of dried mung fish (washed) or 1 palm-sized dried cuttlefish (washed)
  • 2 thin slices of ginger
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 1 teaspoon of olive oil (alternatives: canola, sunflower or flaxseed oil)
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • Pepper to taste
  • 4 hard-boiled eggs (optional)

Preparation:

  • Parboil the chicken thigh in water for 1 to 2 minutes. Discard the water and rinse away excess fats from the chicken thigh.
  • Put mung fish, ginger slices and the parboiled chicken thigh into a stewing pot made of glass, corningware or clay. Add water into the pot and cook over high heat. When the water starts to boil, switch to low heat and stew for 2 hours.
  • Skim the soup surface to remove excess oil. Next, add in carrot, Chinese yam, garlic cloves, lotus seeds and red dates, and stew for another hour.
  • After that, add goji berries and olive oil, and season with salt and pepper. Stir well. Turn off the heat and let the soup steep for 10 minutes.
  • Finally, pour 2 bottles of BRAND’S® Essence of Chicken with Tangkwei into the soup and stir well. Add in hard-boiled eggs if preferred. Scoop the soup into bowls and serve hot.

Alternative preparation:

  • If using a slow cooker, put all the ingredients into 800 to 900ml of water and cook on Auto or High mode for 4 to 5 hours, or Low mode for 7 to 8 hours. Once cooking time is up, follow steps 4 and 5 above.

Consumption guide:

  • For women suffering from menstruation symptoms, take 1 serving of this soup daily for 3 to 5 days, 1 week before and after the menstruation cycle. It is recommended to consume this soup in the morning and not later than 3pm because it may cause heatiness in some individuals.
  • For women undergoing menopause, consume 1 serving of this soup daily.
  • After taking medication, wait 30 minutes to an hour before consuming the soup.
